Team Building Guide — How to Compose Any NTE Team
The three-role structure
Every NTE fight runs on a simple structure: one character deals the damage, one makes that damage bigger, and one keeps everyone alive. The three roles are Damage, Buff, and Survival — and the single most common team-building mistake is stacking two Damage characters and wondering why the numbers don’t move.
A buffed B-tier carry out-damages an unbuffed SS-tier one. That isn’t hyperbole; it’s the arithmetic the whole meta runs on. Buffers like Sakiri and Hotori multiply your entire team’s output, so your first investment after a carry should almost always be a buffer, not a second damage dealer.
Buffers are the meta
The tier list tells the story: Sakiri and Hotori sit in SS tier alongside the game’s biggest damage dealers, and neither of them is a damage dealer. Sakiri groups enemies and amplifies team damage; Hotori freezes time in a stasis field and snapshots a damage buff your carry spends. Both are “always bring” units that never leave a serious roster.
The practical rule: one buffer slot is mandatory, two is a valid endgame choice (Hotori + a carry + Iroi is the v1.2 “version answer” for exactly this reason). What you should not do is treat buffers as optional.
Element synergy, not element count
NTE has six Esper types — Anima, Chaos, Cosmos, Incantation, Lakshana, Psyche — but strong teams are built around enabling a carry’s element, not sprinkling all six. The clearest example is Haniel: an A-Rank buffer whose devices specifically enable Chaos-element bursts, which makes her best-in-slot for Chaos, Lacrimosa, and Daffodill comps despite her rarity.
When you build a team, ask “who makes my carry’s element stronger?” before “who else deals damage?” A focused element core with an enabler beats a rainbow team every time.
The survival slot
Your third slot is a choice between a healer (Iroi, Edgar, Adler) and a tank (Fadia). The decision is about your content and your dodging:
- Iroi is the ceiling — dream lambs intercept hits, she grants invulnerability windows, and her ultimate heals and revives. If you own her, she’s the default.
- Fadia redirects team damage to herself, enabling aggressive, dodge-light play. The comfort pick for boss content above your gear level.
- Edgar is the free, zero-investment option who auto-heals your lowest-HP ally. Perfectly fine until you pull one of the above.
Budget to premium: the upgrade ladder
Teams evolve; you don’t rebuild from scratch. The standard ladder:
- Start: Esper Zero + Sakiri (or any buffer) + Edgar — the free core that clears the story.
- Add a carry: swap Esper Zero for Nanally, Chiz, or Shinku when you pull one. The buffer + healer shell stays.
- Add an enabler: slot Haniel or Hotori in as your second premium unit.
- Endgame: a limited hypercarry + Hotori + Iroi — the v1.2 definitive shape.
Notice what never changes: the buffer and survival slots. Carries rotate; the shell is permanent. That’s the whole philosophy of NTE team building.
